Former high jumper Janků: I’ll give Continental Cup’s tickets as gifts

These days, London hosts the highlight of this year’s athletic season. Part of the athletic stars that shine at the IAAF World Championships at the Olympic stadium in the British metropolis will arrive in Ostrava the next autumn. What’s the reason? The City stadium Vítkovice will welcome the Continental Cup 2018. The tickets for this unique event will go on sale at Ticketportal.

“I plan to buy at least twenty tickets for my friends and I will give them as Christmas presents because there will not be other opportunity to see so many athletics stars in one place in the Czech Republic,” explains Tomáš Janků, the Director of the Czech Athletic Federation.

A few years ago, Janků also started at prestigious team event, it was called the World Cup. And he won the high jump in Athens 2006.

“I was glad that I managed to join such prestigious event,” he recalls. “I always enjoyed team competitions, so to be part of the team in Athens was a big challenge and a great responsibility for me. Of course I wanted to win.”

The Continental Cup is one of the most prestigious athletics events organized by the International Association of Athletics Federations and at the same the biggest athletic competition in the world that Czech Republic can host. It has been held irregularly since 1977 but until 2008 it was named the World Cup.

It is a team competition of an atypical format. It takes places every four years and it is a unique duel of the best men and the best women from each continent. Athletes from Europe, Africa, America and Asia-Oceania will arrive in Ostrava next year.

By the way, it is the second most important event for IAAF just after the World Championships – the proof is that three million dollars will be split into prize money.

“It is so prestigious event that it is almost harder to get to it than to win on the spot. The best athletes from all the continents compete. Maybe it sounds odd but I really feel that it’s easier to win this Cup than get a post in team,” Janků admits.

What’s more, the Continental Cup is a great social event. “There is a great team spirit during the event. Personally, I was glad to have met people across all disciplines within the team. Most people in athletics focus just on themselves and their disciplines but in this competition there exists totally different, cohesive atmosphere,” Janků encloses.

Due to enormous interest about top athletics event in the Czech Republic in recent years, whether it is annual Golden Spike Ostrava or the successful European Athletics Indoor Championships in Prague 2015, the organizing committee has decided to offer fans the opportunity to get tickets for the Continental Cup 2018 in a big advance.
